JavaScript-API für Google Earth veröffentlicht

Google hat ein Browser-Plug-in veröffentlicht, mit dem Google Earth in den gängigen Webbrowsern angezeigt wird. Bislang war Google Earth ein Programm, das extra installiert werden musste. Parallel zum Browser-Plug-in hat Google auch eine JavaScript-API für Earth veröffentlicht.

Jeder Seitenbetreiber kann ab sofort eine miniaturisierte Ansicht auf Google Earth mit nur einer Codezeile integrieren. Der dazu notwendige Earth-Key ist kostenlos bei Google zu bekommen. Die Browser-Inkarnation weicht nur wenig von den Möglichkeiten ab, die das bisherige Einzelprogramm bot. Die Navigation und die Seitenaufbaugeschwindigkeit nötigen dem Rechner allerdings einige Leistung ab.

Eingeblendete Wegmarkierungen, Informationen aus KLM-Dateien und 3D-Gebäude lassen sich problemlos im Browser betrachten. Durch die JavaScript-API, für die Google eine umfangreiche Dokumentation und eine Reihe Beispielanwendungen veröffentlicht hat, steht es Entwicklern frei, den Globus für ihre eigenen Zwecke zu nutzen.

Das kleine Programm, das für die Darstellung notwendig ist, läuft mit dem Internet Explorer ab Version 6.0 und dem Firefox 2.0. Mit Firefox 3.0 arbeitet das Plug-in nicht zusammen. Derzeit hat nur die Windows-Welt etwas von dem Google Earth: Für Mac- oder Linux-Nutzer bleibt der Bildschirm weiß.

Microsoft bietet schon seit einiger Zeit eine Webversion von Virtual Earth samt SDK an.
